Surveillance found her going for a jog – WorkCover fraud case study

It’s worth double checking that your employees’ WorkCover claims are legitimate.

Once upon a time, there was a woman who worked for an Australian Government medical body. She came down with a terminal illness. It was an extremely difficult time for her and her loved ones.

As her illness worsened, her ability to function – including walking and talking – deteriorated until she could no longer work. Luckily, she was able to claim work cover from her job, allowing her to live quietly at home as best she could.

But something didn’t feel right.

You see, medical and insurance companies are well-versed in workplace injuries. Chances are, they know better than the average worker how the injury or illness is likely to progress, with and without medical attention.

The medical body engaged us to conduct a WorkCover investigation on the worker in question, and find out what was really going on.

It’s lucky they did. Through our surveillance, we caught the woman departing her house one day.

To go for a jog.

Not only that, but she also was caught working at a local shop.

All this while claiming Work Cover for a terminal illness, which had allegedly left her totally incapacitated.

WorkCover fraud investigations can help stop the scammers

Unfortunately, many people see work cover as easy money. If you’re ‘lucky’ enough to have an accident at work, all you have to do is pretend the injury is worse than it is, and you’re set.

The problem with that logic is that more and more people are trying to take advantage of the system.

There are several different types of WorkCover fraud, including:

  • Employer fraud
  • Worker fraud
  • Health professional fraud

Other types can also include fraud committed by friends or family, witnesses, or even staff involved.

If you suspect your employee is committing fraud, report them here. If you want to know for sure before making a move, get in touch with Melbourne Investigations. We’ll conduct discreet surveillance and gather all the evidence you need.
